What is VoIP?

Are you wondering about what it is termed VoIP frequently used in the media and are getting everyone so excited? Well, if you do not already know, VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. A technology lets you make telephone calls over the Internet, rather than a regular phone line. This is always a cheaper way and more practical to use, especially with the advent of more internet sophisticated abilities.

VoIP can be considered as voices traveling over internet lines and wires like other information would. Even if you do not have a clue about the VoIP technology, you might be utilizing it everyday. Well, if you have a digital phone line or if you use a microphone hooked into your computer to speak to others while you are connected to the internet.

In using VoIP, both call sender and receiver need a "broadband" connection. Broadband connection is a high-speed Internet connection provided by cable or a DSL modem. Broadband modems are usually used to connect computers to the Internet. In the case of VoIP, computers are not necessary, as long as you have the internet connection, you can talk through telephones that connect directly to the person you would like to talk to.

Here are some requirements for you to activate VoIP:

1. You need high-Speed Connection. VoIP's simplest form is a computer-to-computer voice connection. You only require a computer with a broadband connection, a headset consisting of earphones and microphone, and VoIP software.

There are free VoIP software packages and you can have them by downloading one from the Internet at versiontracker.com. Once you have the VoIP software, they allow you to connect to any computer that also has VoIP software. The only time that both parties need the same VoIP software package is when they are making computer-to-computer calls.

There is no charge for this type of connection, and calls can be made to anywhere in the world.

VoIP software can also connect to landline phones. If you have VoIP software, you can contact people whose phones that are not connected directly to the Internet. Calls like these have charges, yes but it costs a less than telephone company charges. Some

By having VoIP services, you are also allowed you to make calls to cellular phones. Parties receiving landline or cellular calls do not need any extra equipment or software.

2. Since VoIP is based on digital data transmission, you need to convert the analog human voice into digital data and divide itl into groups of numbers. Then, you have to reduce the data to a size without sacrificing audio quality.

These digital data become packets with information about their destination and their place in the data stream.

3. The transport layer used by most VoIP transmissions is called User Datagram Protocol, a high-speed protocol. A commonly used application layer is Real-time Transmission Protocol provides information about the sequence of the data packets, so they can be reconstructed in the correct order at their destination.

4. Once the voice data has arrived at its destination, it is reassembled in the correct order and converted from digital back to analog -- the sound of your voice.

VoIP technology can be a good asset for us. You can save up lots of landline phone calls with high rates and communicate with your loved ones or business partners, associates and customers affordably.

The digital phone and VoIP technology in general saves us against very high-priced and tax-laden calls that are sometimes delayed and not clear. You do not have to tell me if you decide to take advantage of VoIP.
